Visual artist Kayla Noel Johnson brings her unique storytelling to life through documentation of her personal experiences through mediums such as photography, intricate architectural work, digital design, and illustration. Much of her work is inspired by the relationship between human nature, storytelling, and a sense of community. “You can learn something from each person you encounter, no matter how big or small the lesson. I am also a very introverted and emotional individual, so having people in my circle that I know I can trust is important to me. Oh, and Frank Ocean… Frank inspires me like no other.” In May of 2020, Johnson graduated from the University of South Florida’s School of Architecture and Community Design with her Master of Architecture. During her time at USF, Johnson created her own platform for architectural students to share their work, Instagram @studentsofsacd, which she still facilitates today. Her idea for the Instagram was inspired from an Urban Outfitters’ blog and the sharing of creative ideas from other influencers.
“I think the art of design and the people behind design are often overlooked. I feel like I always see features of people in fashion and other industries and never design students.” Since graduation, Johnson has become a full-time practicing artist based in Jacksonville, Florida.
